What I intend to do here is demonstrate a few techniques that may be helpful in adjusting contrast, bringing out detail in underexposed areas on images, and reducing noise in digital photographs and video.

Let me make it clear, however, that the preferred solution is always to have professionally photographed images to begin with. This will always be superior to trying to fix an image later on. But, in the real world, there are times where we have to make due with second best, or do our best to make it work. These techniques cannot save every picture, but often will help bring a substandard photo up to an acceptable level.

Parts One and Two deal primarily with issues of excessive contrast resulting from uncontrolled non-studio environments, and the use of cameras with automatic exposure. A common problem in such instances is over or under exposure, or increased contrast, leaving important details in the shadows. Here is a trick to retrieve some of that lost data.
Part Three also makes use of the above technique, but also addresses one of the more serious problems associated with under-exposure in digital photography: NOISE! This technique may help somewhat.
